Eczema Tips #2

Trying to control eczema? Eliminate all residual detergents in your clothes and bedding by adding less detergent to your laundry and doing a double rinse. You may also find that soap flakes are less irritating, and you should avoid using fabric softeners.

Avoid eczema triggers! While some conditions that aggravate your eczema, like winter weather, are certainly out of your control, there are things you can control, such as eliminating foods that you may be sensitive to (eggs, milk, nuts, seafood, wheat or soy, etc.) or avoiding skin irritants (soaps, detergents, perfumes, allergens such as dust mites and pet dander). Always use moisturizers frequently and liberally, especially after bathing, and only use mild soaps and cleansers that won't dry out your skin. Managing stress is also an important way to deal with this itchy, uncomfortable skin condition.

Do you have eczema?

Immediately after washing the affected area and patting it dry, apply a moisturizing cream. This can help to restore moisture to your skin and will improve the appearance of dryness and scaling associated with eczema. Regular use of a moisturizer will help you to break out of the "dry skin cycle", which is caused by the skin's inability to self hydrate and repair its natural moisture barrier function. Applications of lotions and creams will continually replenish lost moisture and help those with eczema to manage chronic dry skin.
