Microdermabrasion is a relatively painless technique used to repair minor defects and abnormalities in the skin. Originally, the procedure entailed spraying fine crystals over the face, not unlike a very gentle sandblaster, and using suction to remove the dead outer layer of the skin.
Today , however, it is more common for Microdermabrasion to be preformed using a diamond-tipped wand that is run over the skin. Home Microdermabrasion kits are also availble, but are not as powerful as those used professionally in a doctor's office or spa.
Touted as an effective anti-aging procedure, Microdermabrasion can lessen fine lines and wrinkles in the skin, as well as acne scaring and mild hyperpigmentation. It should be note that often multiple treatment are necessary and that Microdermabrasion has little effect on scars that are sunken below the skin surface. It should be also be noted that Microdermabrasion will not have either the same effects as the now rarely used medical dermabrasion, which is much more severe and is generally performed under either general anesthetic or, at least, some degr of sedation.
